DESCRIPTION:Sara Luering stands next to an old steam engine that was used to run a saw mill in the 1950s. \n  \nSpecialist to speak about prescribed burns\, invasive removal and other major projects at the park \nSara Luering\, a park services specialist at Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, will be the guest speaker at the Palm Beach Pack & Paddle Club’s meeting at 7 p.m. Monday\, July 10\, at the Okeeheelee Nature Center\, part of Okeeheelee Park\, 7715 Forest Hill Blvd. in West Palm Beach. \nThe meeting begins at 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive for socializing starting at 6:30 p.m. \nSara will speak about how the park preserves 10\,500 acres and supports more than 350\,000 annual visitors. \nBalancing conservation and recreation is an “all hands on deck” operation at the park\, she says. Using tools such as prescribed fire and invasive removal paired with a robust interpretation program\, the park allows visitors to feel part of the conservation efforts. \nLOVE OF OUTDOORS \nRaised in Jacksonville\, Sara grew up with a love of the outdoors. She spent her free time at the beach\, in the woods or watching nature documentaries. \nShe attended Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk\, North Carolina where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife rehabilitation with a minor in psychology. Her coursework included a summer clinical caring for injured wildlife and presenting educational programs to the local community. \nFULFILLING A DREAM \nSara moved to South Florida to pursue a career as a zookeeper. During her time as a zookeeper\, Sara became interested in Florida ecosystems and how to educate Floridians about their own backyard. She became a park services specialist at Jonathan Dickinson State Park and is fulfilling that dream now. \nAt the park\, Sara enjoys interpreting the natural and cultural resources to the public. She is able to accomplish this through educational programs\, guided hikes\, outreaches\, and by running the Kimbell Education and Visitor Center inside the park. \nWhen not at work\, Sara can be found on her paddleboard exploring mangrove tunnels or hiking in one of Florida’s unique habitats with her husband\, Andrew\, and dogs\, Sawyer and Copper. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Pirates join Pack and Paddle\, RFAR (Recess for Active Retirees) and native plant specialist\, Mike LaTour Monday 10 AM May 15th 2023 for a stroll along the   1 mile long boardwalk ( 2 mile R-T)  at Grassy Waters Preserve\, 8264 Northlake Blvd.\, West Palm Beach. This beautiful preserve consists of 23 acres of wetlands which filter West Palm Beach’s water supply. Mike will point out a variety of native plants along the way with uses by native Floridians. Bring a picnic lunch( leave in your car) to eat afterward along the waterfront at picnic tables with umbrellas or under the chickee shelters. \nGrassy Waters is less than an a mile west of the intersection of BeeLine Highway and Northlake Blvd\, on the south side of the road. Look in the median for the marker. FYI ..People have had issues in the past with the GPS. Check the map location as this is on Northlake Blvd. \nWe’ll meet at the boardwalk entrance just at the edge of the parking lot. Mike is wearing the white cowboy hat!

Macarthur State Park.  Meet near the gift store at 9:45 AM.  Bring your camera\, sunscreen\, water and good walking shoes.  Leave your lunch in your car and you can bring it and eat under s lovely\, rustic\, shaded chickee.\nPack and Paddle joining RFAR (Recess For Active Retirees) for a ranger guided nature walk at John D. MacArthur State Park 10900 Jack Nicklaus Drive North Palm Beach FL 33408\n. Admission $5 per car .This is the only State Park within Palm Beach County and in addition to the variety of environments\, boasts 1.6 miles of pristine beach.\nJohn D. MacArthur Beach State Park | Florida State Parks. Meet Monday April 24 2023  9:45 AM at the gift shop for the 10 AM Ranger guided nature walk of about 1 & 1/2 hours. The lead guide will be Stephanie Grant. She is an amazing volunteer who has been leading educational tours for the park for over 20 years. This is not a hike\, we will be stopping frequently to point out and explain about the plants and animals. The boardwalk is out in the open so wear protective clothing if sun exposure is a concern. . The 1/3 mile Dune Hammock Trail is shaded. Wear comfortable shoes; bring camera\, binoculars\, water and sunscreen. You may wish to take advantage of an optional visit to the Nature Center afterward to see it’s exhibits\, live animals and aquarium. They also have (3) 15 minute nature films to watch in the air conditioned theater. Bring a picnic lunch…. we can eat in a covered area over near Satin Leaf Trail . You may want to drive there. Can walk Satinleaf trail if you want . 1.3 miles trail is located at the north end of the Park near the playground and the north pavilion. \nThe Satinleaf Trail winds through a mixed maritime hammock comprised of 60%-70% tropical plant species. Hammocks are forested areas that are slightly higher than the surrounding land. As you walk the trail\, be sure to notice the subtle elevation changes and the corresponding changes in plant life that accompany them.
